Amazing Fish!

Hello Sportsfriends and welcome to the weekly line here at Ballard’s Resort.  Brrrrrrrrrrr…  Can those of you in the southern tier feel this most recent bite of winter?  AWESOME isn’t it?!  Say YES!

Here we are…  Not quite three weeks into the ice fishing season…  And we bumped into our first barometric hitch.

ba·rom·e·ter:  measuring atmospheric pressure, used especially in forecasting the weather and determining altitude.

This past weekend outdoor temps dipped well into the minus twenties and the high pressure (bouncing barometer) left us with a predictable result. Slower fishing…

The crazy hot bite that we enjoyed for much of first ice, cooled off with the dip in the thermometer, and by Lake of the Woods standards fishing by most was graded as “fair” to “tough”.  What did we see? Still plenty of fresh fish for the table…  And some bounty to take home to share with others at a later date.

At times it’s funny…  Not as in HA HA…  But as in OK.  We (our guides) take what the weather hands to us and we move on to the next day or in this case the next week.

And we move move move…

This is why our guides are so AWESOME!  They keep the shacks on the go and keep putting us in the best possible spots to find fish.

Monday is a new start for us.  Looking at the long term is appears as though a warm-up is coming by the weekend.  This should bode well for visiting anglers.

Also, we need the cold…  We need to build some ice for longevity of season…Right now we are still using the little light-weight jeeps and people haulers (trailers) to transport everyone to the main lake.  Still not quite enough ice, as of today, for us to be able to put the Bombardiers to use.  We will have to see how the week plays out.

Otherwise…  Fishing wise?  It’s been more of the same as far as location.  Tight to the south shore…  West end by Morris…  25-30 feet of water.  And the bite in this area continues to be dominated by saugers.

Until next time…  Set the hook!
