Sandbars and Saugers…

6/4/15

Hello Sportsfans and welcome to the weekly report here at Ballard’s Resort.

Not a ton of change from last week. The guides are going here, there and everywhere… From Long Point to Garden Island to the Gap…Finding consistency from day to day remains the name of the game…

Mornings tend to be spent jigging the sandbars and then moving to the rock rubbles for an afternoon of drifting spinners.

What are they seeing? When anchored & jigging (sandbars) the trend seems to be a lot of saugers and occasionally some slot fish. When drifting spinners (rock rubbles) they’re finding more keeper walleyes.

With all the rain and chilly overnights, the water temperatures are still holding at 55 degrees, which is colder than the ideal temp. It looks like the 10 day forecast is predicting to be in the 70’s …hopefully that will help warm things up!

Every day is an adventure on Lake of the Woods…

See you soon and don’t forget to make time to…

YEE HAW!!!

5/27/15

Greetings Sportsfans – YEE HAW!!!

What.A.Weekend. …Beautiful weather here on L-O-W and a lot of great fishing memories were made.

We are still traveling North and fishing Knight, Bridges & around Garden Island. We hate to say it, but it’s been a little spotty, it can be good one day and poor the next, unfortunately not too strong in the consistency department.

We’ve done a mix of jigging and pulling spinners but have seen the best luck with a gold 3/8 oz. jig with a frozen shiner on the end.

We’ve been stopping occasionally in Big Traverse and giving it a try, but haven’t seen much action…It’s transition time for the walleyes as the water temps are changing.

The annual crew from Davenport-Tipton-Cedar Rapids area was up this weekend and boy did they have a fantastic trip… Not only did the weather cooperate (70’s and sunny) they found some nice fish too!!

A gentleman from the group said to me, “If you ever have someone say they are too old to do this, they’re wrong! I’m 80 years old and I just caught my fish of a lifetime.” Boy, was he excited!!

And he’s right; there is no age limit to YOUR catch of the lifetime!

Speaking of Fish of a Lifetime…a shout out to Matt on his 30 3/4 inch hog yesterday with Capt. Travis…Way to Go Matt!!

Until next week…

Hello Sportsfans!

Welcome to the weekly reel here at Ballard’s Resort.  This week one of our very own caught the catch of her life…Meghan (and her husband Toby) from the office gang welcomed a healthy baby boy, Owen Michael on Friday May 15th.  Weighing in at 7lbs 9 oz and 19″ long…he’s a keeper!  Congrats Meghan & Toby!

This week we’ve had below average temps and wait for it…SNOW…yuck, it is May isn’t it?!  With plenty of rainfall these past seven days the river level is starting to rise, which is good news as it’s about a foot below normal.  Temperatures look good for the upcoming Memorial Weekend…highs in the 70’s.

The best luck has been off the Knight Shoals and Bridges Island…anchor up, tip your jig with an emerald shiner and get ready to…

Hey Sportsfans!  Ready…Set…GO…The green flag dropped and the opener has come and gone.  What a FUN weekend!!  Things were in full gear on Friday night with enthusiastic fishermen ready to test the waters. Good times had by all…man it’s good to be back!

A full fleet of guide boats set sail Saturday morning and scattered about the river and the main lake.  The best bet was in about 22 feet along Pine Island from the Lighthouse Gap to the Morris Point Gap…anchor up and JIG JIG JIG!  With plenty of slot fish and trophy walleyes, it was tough to find some good eaters…but hey, I guess that’s an ok problem to have sometimes!

3/8 oz. jigs have been the weight of choice of the guides…you could go lighter as the current isn’t real strong.  We’ve had a cold, rainy stretch here since the opener but temps are looking up for the latter part of this week.  The water temperature is sitting around 47 degrees.

With warmer air and a bit of sunshine in the forecast, we’re anticipating another great weekend! If you don’t have plans…get up here and…
