Hello Sportsfans and welcome to the weekly sha-bang here on The Woods. It’s late October… Migrating walleyes… River bite… What’s the latest?

Numbers numbers numbers: our guided charters this past week anchored up mostly west and combed Birch Beach / Long Point for both size and numbers. Quite a bit of that was due to the prevailing NW winds that have most recently haunted us. But, overall, there have been numbers of walleyes to pound on in the flats. That’s if you go west, and north, out on the Big Traverse.

Today we have rain… And wind… Tomorrow? More of the same. It’s late October. It rains…

As mentioned there has been a continuation of NWesters coming and going as the fall progresses. Pretty typical for late fall fishing. Biggest problem is that it churns up the waters near Four Mile, Morris, and Lighthouse. Not good walleye reports from these areas.

A river bite? “Not too much.” That’s what we’re hearing from the local anglers near Baudette. A few fish here and there in the morning, and maybe the same late afternoon, but nothing crazy.

You can check the Clementson, Frontier, and Birchdale areas off your list also. From the chatter we are gathering: “Not too much.” It’s the same report in these locations that we are hearing near Baudette.

What’s weird? Tremendous emerald shiner run in the confines of the Rainy River. Tons and tons and tons of shiners. With so much bait one would have to anticipate a late fall migration of trophy walleyes. Will it happen later? Tough call…

Angler activity on the lake really slows down this time of year. Deer season is coming. Walleye fishing is taking a back seat to hunting.

We’ll keep you posted. Set the hook!
