July 7th Ballard's Resort Fishing Report

JULY 7TH -

Hey Sportsfans!

The past week has been busy… in the best way possible. Ballard’s celebrated the week of the Fourth of July by:

– Hosting 2 fantastic Walleye Connection groups. (One from Ramsey, MN and the other from Bismarck, ND.) If you want to make a trip up to Ballard’s, but don’t want the hassle of driving up yourself, check out our Walleye Connection motorcoach trips.

– Enjoying the nice weather by splashing at the pool and relaxing on the patio.

– Supporting our local communities and the wonderful activities they put on for the Fourth of July.

– Catching trophy size walleyes… this is Lake of the Woods after all.

As temperatures got warmer and the wind calmed down, the fish were on the move. Despite not having the much needed “walleye chop”, the guides were still able to find fish. At the start of the week, Little Traverse Bay was the ticket to having a fresh walleye dinner at the end of the day. By yesterday, the fish (at least those willing to bite) had moved into the deep mud.

This could be the start of the infamous, mid summer, dynamite mud bite… but we will have to see!

That’s all for this week. #SETTHEHOOK

JUNE 30TH BALLARD’S RESORT FISHING REPORT

June 30th Ballard's Resort Fishing Report, Lake of the Woods

June 30 -

Hey Sportsfans!

Back again, on June 30th, with another weekly Ballard’s Resort fishing report.

Did I just hear someone say “Welcome to Fall”?? Unfortunately, so. Our warm, summertime weather was short lived. This past week, it was again cold, wet, and windy.

What’s going on out on the lake?

– The south shore bite on Lake of the Woods is quiet. The high winds have churned up the lake, creating dirty water… not ideal for fishing.

– Fishing has been best North of Garden Island. The guides are currently transitioning from jig fishing to pulling spinners. During this transition time, it seems that both tactics are landing fish in the boat. Spinner fishing in 12-20′ and jigging in the mud have both been productive this week.

– One noticeable difference from last week, the fish are no longer hanging around the rock piles. Time to find the schools of fish on the flats.

– Check out this week’s featured picture… Dale, the newest member of to 30+” club!

Heading into this week, we hope everyone has a fun and safe 4th of July. Celebrations will be happening at Ballard’s Resort and our surrounding communities all week!

That’s all for this week.

JUNE 23

Hey Sportsfans –

I think summer finally got the memo… this past week we have had temperatures in the mid 70s and if you can believe it, we even had a few calm days.

We are in the midst of prime walleye fishing on Lake of the Woods. What’s keeping the nets busy?

– Rumor has it, the Little Traverse mud bite is starting to pick up. Do we believe this fisherman’s tale? The coolers coming in at the end of the day indicate that we should.

– Last week the color to beat was RED.(Remember a red jig topped with a leech?) Keep those same jigs tied on… Many of the fish caught in the mud have been eating red worms and crayfish.

– As expected, the bug hatch is starting up in Big Traverse Bay. When that bite fires up, it’s a don’t want to miss kind of thing.

– The water in the Rainy River is continuing to rise as we receive more rain. If you are boating in the river, keep a watchful eye for driftwood.

– – –

We still have a few openings in August for lodging and guided walleye fishing packages. With only eight weeks left before back to school season, now is the time to plan your family’s trip to Ballard’s Resort. Spend the day walleye fishing, relaxing at the pool in the evenings, and enjoy a family meal on the patio… there is no better way to end the summer.

That’s all for this week… #SETTHEHOOK

Hey Sportsfans!

There are some things in life that are constant:
– The wind on Lake of the Woods… always blowing
– The beer at Ballard’s Resort… ice cold every time
– A fresh walleye fish fry… over-the-top good

Just as there are things that are consistent, there are things that are unpredictable… like where the fish are going to be on LOW, and how they are going to bite.

This week the guides have tried all the tactics…

Capt. Brian has been drifting spinners in 10-17′ of water. Piece of advice if you are looking to catch fish, FOLLOW THE RED TOP.

Speaking of red, Capt. Tilden has been jigging the mud in 27’… a red jig tipped with a leech has been RED HOT.

Pack a little bit of everything in the cooler. Crawlers, leeches, frozen shiners… it has been a daily guessing game on what the fish want.

On the verge is a bug hatch. Will we see the mud bite explode when that happens? We will have to wait and see.
