Counting Down to the End of January

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1580164827895{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Hey Sportsfans!

Fishing has been fishing up here on Lake of the Woods! We’ve been doing our best to stay on the fish and keep moving our houses out farther. We have been following the elusive WALLEYE as close as we can, but the smaller saugers have been following too, which means; prepare to sift through some smaller fish to get through to the big ones!

What we have found from out fishing: the fish have still been holding tight to the bottom, BUT still a great idea to have the flasher on to find the “highflyer” anywhere from 5-10 feet off the bottom. Hot ticket jigs are going to be anything bright and glowing, and a rattle doesn’t hurt either. Guest have been using just heads on their buckshot’s, Swedish pimples, and anything bigger than a jig, still using full live fatheads on our dead stick/bobber rigs!

We have our ice houses still sitting on 26”of ice in about 34’ of water out on the mud, just a hair over 13 miles out!

Shredding Powder and CRUSHING Big Fish!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1579555035601{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Hey Sportsfans!

It’s our favorite part of January, we are out enjoying the best things Lake of the Woods has to offer!  fishing the mud, unplowed trails where bombers are showing their full glory in all this snow, and last but not least BIG WALLEYES!

We are 10 miles off pine island and fishing near the reefs but still out in the famous Lake of the Woods mud! We have been seeing a handful of NICE slot fish every day while having to sort through the little fish to get some nice keepers!

Hot ticket items have been anything that is orange, pink and/or glowing still fishing right off the bottom with a suspended fish here and there.

It Was Time To Move, And It Paid Off!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1578866028385{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Hey Sportsfans!

We have made another advancement out to fresh ice to escape the crowds on Lake of The Woods! We are starting to get into some BIG walleyes and a NICE mixture saugers and walleyes for the bucket!

The fish have been timid and stuck close to the bottom. Electronics have been a huge help for finding that stray walleye 3-5 feet of the bottom.

Best luck has been with pink and gold jigs with a nice red hook! Lightly tapping the bottom and when a fish is spotted holding still, there hasn’t been much “smacking” of lures.

Our ice houses are still about 6 miles out, sitting in 30-32 feet of water, and sitting on about 22-24 inches of ice with drifted snow 5-20 inches!

Snow Doesn’t Bother the Bombardiers

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1577922543659{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Hey Sportsfans!

I know what you’re going to ask me, YES, we got snow and a lot of it. But you know what that means.. We have the bombardiers out!

We powered through the snowstorm and kept fishing in almost white out conditions, our guest still got to enjoy a fresh fish fry dinner each night here at Ballard’s!

The big trophy walleyes are starting to come out and play a little more on Lake of the Woods, with a few making guest appearances! We have been seeing a good amounts of saugers to fill the buckets and a few perfect keeper sized walleyes.

Our ice houses are in anywhere from 29-31 feet of water, and about 3 miles north of Pine Island on Lake of the Woods.

We have about 18-20 inches of ice on our private ice road and seeing anywhere from 0-24 inches of snow on top not including some monster drifts!

And the “HOT” tip I got from the guides: “it’s a house to house basis of if the jig pole or the dead stick is the winning ticket. Try them both out and don’t be afraid to fish on the bottom of the lake!”

Happy New Years!
