We have ended our first week back in the charter boats, the guides have knocked the cobwebs off, and they are ready to get back into their prime!

Weather this past week has been ideal with little wind and partly cloudy skies. Fishing has not been spectacular, but we have yet to come home empty handed!

Water Temps:

Lake of the Woods: 55 Degrees

Rainy River: 57 Degrees

Fishing Tips:

Jigging: 12-16’ On rock piles and points

Some have started to pull shad raps in 8-13 feet of water along break lines.

2020 OPENER!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1589130769499{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Hey Sports Fans!

Typically for fishing opener you change fishing tactics and tackle to get on a GREAT bite. This year we decided it was in our best interest to change our resort tactics to keep our GREAT guests safe and healthy!

Operating the resort for opener was definitely a challenge, we tried to run as normal as possible but made some major changes to keep protect employees/guest; delivery of food to cabins, operating a take-out window and the weirdest of all: a piece of glass between us at check in/out!

Guests made the most of opener and fish stories were plentiful. Catching a nice bag before noon, taking a nap and hitting it hard again for an evening grind! Lots of beautiful spawned out slot fish caught along with perfect sized eaters!

Both the lake and river proved very productive in the morning and slowed down towards the afternoon. We had guests make the run up to garden island and guest go all the way up the river to frontier. Seems like the guys that stayed closer to the south shore and in the river had bigger smiles on their faces coming back to shore!

Run down of tips and tricks:

-LOTS of fish still in the river moving out towards the lake

-Ideal fishing depth: 10-22’

-River temperature 50 degrees

-Lake temperature 41 degrees

-Smallest jig one can get away with in current tipped with a frozen shiner.

Overall a successful opener here at Ballard’s. gets us excited for the opening of charter fishing and the rest of this summer!

The March Begins In March!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1583939590468{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Hey Sportsfans!

We are still fishing on LAKE OF THE WOODS!

Ice conditions have been great so as we start late ice season and we are loving it, now if we could figure out a solid fish pattern!

Fishing has been okay, with a few slow days here and there but making up for it when that MONSTER Lake of The Woods walleye comes through on his way back to the Rainy River!

We have started our return to the south shore and moving houses slowly back in!

Depth: 27-30 Feet of water

Better Late Than Never

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1583287993771{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Hey Sportsfans!

OOPS! Can you tell the temperatures have been warming up? I forgot to post an update last Sunday while out enjoying the weather, maybe I should extend the WiFi out to my deck!

Fishing has been great here at Ballard’s Resort we have chased the notorious Lake of the Woods walleye out to about 18 miles out, and now we about to start the chase the BIG walleyes back to their spring home on the RAINY RIVER!

Ice conditions are still allowing us to fish and not struggle to bad while doing it! (Ice heaves starting to appear, see pictures below) Top layer of snow is starting to disappear, but the ice underneath is standing its ground! Don’t worry our team of guides take every precaution to make sure your time spent on Lake of the Woods is safe and FUN!

Fishing Report:

Depth: 29-33 Feet of water

Method: Still jigging off the bottom, fish have gotten more aggressive following lures 2-5 feet of the bottom before striking. Bare essential dead stick setups have still been productive in this time as well!

Ice conditions: Still GREAT, starting to show the decline but crossing fingers we still have quite some time of ice fishing left!
